How is Heart Valve Surgery Performed

Our heart consists of valves which allow the blood to flow in one direction only. There are flaps present in the valves that open to let blood flow. There are four heart valves – mitral, tricuspid, aortic and pulmonary valve. Mitral and tricuspid are two atrioventricular valves which are between the upper and lower chambers. Aortic and pulmonary are semilunar valves which are in the arteries leaving the heart. But in some unfavorable cases, at least one of the valves doesn’t function properly. In this case, heart valve surgery is required.

In heart valve surgery, the surgeon either repairs or replaces the affected heart valve. In can either be done as an open heart surgery or as minimally invasive heart surgery.

Open Heart Surgery

It is a traditional heart surgery in which the chest is cut open and surgery is performed on the muscles, valves or arteries of the heart. There are many reasons for having an open heart surgery and repairing of heart valve is one of them. This procedure is done under the influence of general anesthesia. This ensures that you are asleep and pain free through the whole surgery.

In this procedure, an 8-10 inch incision is made in the chest. The heart is accessed by cutting through the patient’s breastbone. The patient is then connected to a heart lung bypass machine. The blood is moved away from the heart so that the surgeon can operate. A healthy vein is then used to make a new path around the blocked artery. The surgeon closes the breastbone with wire leaving the wire inside the body. The original cut is stitched.

Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery

In Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery in Jaipur, heart surgery is performed through small incisions is the right side of the chest. There are several benefits of this procedure –

Breastbone is not cut open.

Surgeon has better view of some parts of the heart.

There is less blood loss and lower risk of infection.

The scars are less noticeable and smaller in size.

In robot assisted heart surgery, the exact procedure of open heart surgery is duplicated using robotic arm. The heart is viewed with the help of a magnified high definition 3-d view on a video monitor. In thoracoscopic surgery, a long thin tube known as thoracoscope is inserted into the small incisions to repair the heart valves.
