Treating Children with the Help of Pediatric Surgery

Any condition that is suffered by children should not be taken lightly. It may be an indication of a big disease that is just in its initial stage. Sooner it is treated, lesser will be the chances of complications. Some of the conditions are present in heart since birth which can be life threatening. This is why you need the help of a specialist that is dedicated in well being of children only. This is where pediatrics comes into play. It is the branch of medicine that involves the medical care of newborns, infants, children and adolescents. In acute cases, there is need of surgery. For the care of your newborn, you should only consider the finest pediatric treatment surgery hospital.

The needs and buildup of children are vastly different from that of adults. The organs and body parts are not yet developed and have other needs. Children are different from adults in physiological, psychological as well as mental aspects. Special attention should be given to them. Similarly, the illnesses which they suffer from also need to be treated differently. All the children and adolescents under the age of 16 are considered by pediatricians. Some of the diseases that may require surgery are –

Congenital Diseases

These diseases occur at or before birth. These often are inherited medical conditions. The defects may result in physical, intellectual or developmental disabilities. The results of these diseases can be mild or severe depending on the particular condition. Risk factors of these diseases include folate deficiency, alcohol consumption, smoking etc. The detection of these diseases is done with the help of different prenatal and screening tests. Millions of children suffer from these diseases every year. Surgery is also needed in complex cases.

Lymphangiomas

It is an uncommon swelling of the neck, mouth and the head. These are the malformations of the lymphatic system which are characterized by lesions in the form of thin walled cysts. It occurs in 1 in 4000 births. Half of all the lymphangiomas located in the head and neck region are detected at birth whereas the remaining ones will be indentified by age 2. Pooling and swelling are common symptoms which occur when lymph backs up in the lymph vessels surrounding the body’s tissues. This condition is thought to be caused when there’s an error in cell division during fetal development. This surgery involves cutting out the cyst.

Omphalocele

It is a rare abdominal birth defect in which an infant’s intestine or other abdominal organs are outside of the body because of a hole in the belly button area. These intestines are easily seen as they are covered only by a thin layer of tissue. It looks similar to gastroschisis. These defects develop as a baby grows inside the mother’s womb. Intestines and the other organs like liver, stomach and bladder etc develop outside the body at first and then usually return inside. The treatment options include staged and primary repair. Staged repair is done when the baby is not stable enough for primary repair. Pediatric surgeons also do this surgery if the omphalocele is very large and the organs can’t fit into the baby’s belly. It may take up to 2 weeks or more for all the organs to be back inside the belly.

Conjoined Twins Separation

Conjoined twins are identical twins that are joined together. It is an extremely rare phenomenon and occurs in 1 in 50,000 to 1 in 189,000 births. Children born in Southeast Asia and Africa have a higher incidence of this occurrence. This occurs due to fission in which the fertilized eggs split partially. These twins share a single common chorion, placenta and amniotic sac. Approximately half of twins are stillborn and an additional one third dies within 24 hours. The surgery to separate conjoined twins may range from very easy to very difficult depending on the point of attachment and the internal parts that are shared.
