Artery Blockage Cleared Without Diluting Blood..Read More

In a case of stroke, patient is administered an injection to dilute the blood to ensure uninterrupted blood supply to the brain. But in a rare case, doctors at a city-based hospital successfully removed the blockage in artery without giving patient a blood diluting injection. Doctors claim it is the first kind of such operation in Rajasthan. Sita Devi, a 60-year-old, was rushed to a private hospital by her family members after she started feeling weakness in right side of her body and difficulty in speaking. “An MRI of the patient at the hospital revealed that she has suffered a brain stroke and her relatives moved her here immediately,” Dr Vikram Bohra, senior interventional neurologist at EHCC Hospital said. “Thorough investigation and further tests revealed that she had two blockages. The first one was in the inner vein of the brain and the second blockage was in large vein internal carotid artery. This artery goes to brain from the neck and it supplies blood to the two-thirds part of the brain. In such a case there is a high risk of internal bleeding if the blood was diluted. So our team decided to perform surgery procedure without diluting the blood,” he added. During the treatment, doctors first operated the blockage in the inner vein brain by thrombectomy. After that the blood flow was normalised by inserting a stent in the internal carotid artery. “As soon as the blockages were cleared, condition of the patient started improving on the operation table. It was observed that the patient could speak in improved way and was able to move her right parts of the body. This is the first recorded case in Rajasthan in which the brain surgery was conducted without diluting blood,” said Dr Vikram. As per doctors the patient, post surgery, recovered very fast and she was discharged from the hospital only after four days of the surgery.
