The rate of behavioral changes in children and adolescents is very high. The behavioral changes are extremely prevalent at an early age. Earlier, it was believed that any psychiatric issues cannot be detected in a child below 2 years of age but now the behavioral changes are observed minutely by the doctor during the first 2 years of the child’s life. In most of the cases, the assessment of the child is done by the parents or by the caretaker because they stay in the closest vicinity of the kid in the early part of the child’s life. But this level of observation has not resulted in any substantial assessment of the behavioral changes that a child might develop. Early identification of the problems is critical for three main reasons.

Firstly, Behavioral changes to understand the possibility of any common psychological disorders. Secondly, it is the behavioral change that gets cured overtime. And thirdly, it is to understand the behavioral changes to ameliorate the problems by early intervention.

Developmental delays are often noticed in a large number of children. A child might show developmental delay when he or she shows physiological or social limitations as compared to the other kids of his or her age group. The neuropsychologist or developmental-behavioral pediatrician identifies the developmental delays observed in the child by observing his or her behavior and social skills during interactions with adults or while at play with other kids. The doctors observe the child’s language skills, motor skills, the ability to follow directions and learning ability.

Cause for developmental delays:

  • Genetic or hereditary conditions
  • Metabolic disorder
  • Serious infection
  • Malnutrition
  • Trauma to the brain of the baby
  • Post traumatic stress disorder

Management of behavioral problems:

  • Family therapy: The entire family and the near ones are educated about the disorder and also taught how to communicate with the child.
  • Social training: Important communication skills are taught to the child so that the child can communicate with the fellow kids without any hesitation and do not develop the feeling of being left out in the classroom or at play.
  • Anger management: The child is taught to control his or her anger and growing frustration.
  • Having a talk: The parents are advised to talk to the child after school or whenever the child is exposed to the world outside his or her home.
  • Observe the child: The parents are taught to understand the needs of the child and are also taught to keenly observe the behavioral changes in the child.

Therapies for developmental delays:

  • Physical therapies to help children overcome motor skills problems.
  • Speech and language therapy to overcome the difficulty of the child in communication and producing language and speech sounds.
  • Special education for the child to provide stimulation for early developmental skills, including play skills.
  • Behavioral therapy to develop socially appropriate behavior in the child.
