Vitamin deficiency is more common that one might think.  Everyone thinks whatever they eat is healthy and provides with all the nutritional value but that is not true. Mostly, our diet contains carbohydrates and fats which is not at all enough for our body. Our body needs a balanced diet that contains proteins, vitamins, minerals, micronutrients and fats all in optimum amount. Deficiency of even a single vitamin or mineral can cause any deficiency disease or problem in our body.  

 What is vitamin deficiency?
When the body is deprived of a particular vitamin or more than one vitamin, then the person suffering from it is suffers from vitamin deficiency. Vitamin deficiency can either be caused by lack of proper nutrition or when the body is unable to absorb vitamins even if having it in good amount. 

Symptoms of Vitamin Deficiency:

  • Brittle nails and hair: There are a lot of reasons that causes brittle nails and hair; one of them is deficiency of iron and biotin. Biotin is also called vitamin B7, helps body to convert food into energy. Deficiency of it also causes biotin chronic fatigue, muscle pain, pale skin etc.
  • Bleeding gums: Bleeding gums is classic case of vitamin C deficiency. It is also called sailor’s disease, as sailors that travel in ship for months survive on packed food due to which they are deprived of vitamin C that causes gums to bleed.
  • Night blindness: Vitamin A deficiency is a prime cause of night blindness. People suffering from it lose their ability to see in low light or darkness.  If the disease is left untreated; it might lead to cornea damage. 
  • Hair loss: Hair loss is a very common symptom of vitamin deficiency. It may be caused due to various reasons such as iron deficiency, zinc deficiency, genetic problem, vitamin B3 deficiency and vitamin B7 deficiency etc
  • Mouth ulcers: These are cause due various reasons such as deficiency of vitamin B, iron and Vitamin B6. People who drink less water and do not maintain fluidity in the body suffer from mouth ulcers. Also, one of the reasons of mouth ulcer is increased acidity in the stomach. 

Prevention: 
 A balanced and healthy diet prevents most of the vitamin deficiency disease. Getting vitamins from dietary sources or, from supplements both helps to recover from vitamin deficiency. 

  • Vitamin A rich foods: Apple, milk, eggs, cheese, yogurt, spinach, green leafy vegetables etc
  • Food rich in iron and vitamin B: Eggs, Milk Cheese, yogurt, meat, shellfish, pomegranate, green leafy vegetables.
  • Food rich in Vitamin C: Citrus fruits, strawberries, juices, broccoli, tomatoes and green peppers.
  • Vitamin E rich foods:  Vegetable oils, almonds, peanuts, hazelnuts, spinach, broccoli, sunflower, fruits and vegetables.
