Liver is a very important organ of the human body. Liver is the largest solid organ present in our body, it is reddish brown in color and it is protected by the rib cage. Liver is divided into two parts left and right, it is also surrounded by pancreas and gallbladder. Liver along with these organs work together to digest, absorb and assimilate nutrients. The primary function of the liver is detoxification of the blood; it filters the blood for chemicals and toxins from the digestive tract before passing it to the body. Liver plays a vital role in digestion as it secretes bile salts without which digestion cannot take place.

Liver diseases:
There are varied numbers of liver diseases such as:

  • Hepatitis:  Inflammation or swelling in liver caused by Hepatitis Virus A, B or C. It can be caused by any reason such as obesity, drugs, allergy or drinking.
  • Cirrhosis: Long term damage to liver causes cirrhosis. The liver does not function properly in this case.
  • Gallstones: It occurs when the gallstone is stuck in the bile ducts that come out from the liver.
  • Hemochromatosis: In this condition iron gets deposited in the liver that damages it. This causes many health problems.
  • Liver cancer: It is commonly caused after carcinoma and hepatocellular carcinoma.
  • Liver failure: Liver failure can be caused by any problem such as a genetic disease, drinking excessive alcohol or a genetic disorder.
  • Tumor: A tumor is an abnormal growth of cells or tissues. It can be benign or malign based on their mechanism and effect on the body.
  • Benign Tumor:  It is a form of tumor that is not very risky. It does not affect the surrounding tissues or organs. It is confined in a place and does not spread unless the tumor bursts due to any reason. It can be removed by a simple procedure of surgery and does not harm the body.
  • Malignant Tumor: Malignant tumor is very dangerous, in this the cells grow uncontrollably and spread to nearby tissues or organs. It is cancerous and can be fatal for life. In case of a malignant tumor it spreads by metastasis which means it leaks or spreads from the site of origin to any part of the body.

Diagnosis:

  • Blood test that reveals abnormalities of the liver.
  • Imaging tests such as CT scans, MRI scans or ultrasounds help to diagnose the condition of the liver.
  • Tissue sampling helps to deeply study the condition of damaged liver in a laboratory.

Treatment:

  • Heating the cancer cells: Radiofrequency ablation uses electric current to heat and destroys cancer cells.
  • Freezing cancer cells: Cryoablation uses extreme cold temperatures to destroy the cancer cells.
  • Chemotherapy: It uses drugs rapidly to kill cancerous cells. It is used in advanced stages of cancer.
