The diseases are growing each day in number and which is making it absolutely necessary for the parents to get their child vaccinated to gain immunization against a particular disease. There are a number of vaccination shots that a child is administered with, be it for hepatitis A, smallpox, chicken pox, polio, tuberculosis etc. Allergy shots are the regular injections that a child is provided with, to stop or reduce the allergy attacks. The children between 3-5 years of age are subjected to these allergy shots.

Allergy shots are not only restricted to the young ones only, an adult can also be subjected to the allergy shots in order to gain immunization against a frequently occurring allergy. At the beginning, the number of shots is around one or two shots in a week for several months. The allergy shots contain allergens (pollen, pet dander, mold, dust mites, bee venom), these allergens trigger an allergic reaction and help the individual to develop antibodies against any allergy in the future. Over a prolonged period, the individual is subjected to an increased number of allergens in the shots (every 2-4 weeks for 4-5 months), this helps the body to develop proper immunization against the allergies. This treatment is referred to as immunotherapy. This helps to provide long term relief from various allergies.

Common allergies:

  • Dust mites
  • Feathers
  • Mold spores
  • Pet dander
  • Pollen
  • Stinging insects

Benefits:

  • Helps the body to build immunity against specific allergens, so that the individual is able to live a normal life without getting bothered about allergies.
  • Helps the kids with asthma to fight allergies.
  • Allergy shots are better than oral medications because shots are administered for a certain number of months, unlike the oral medication that is always prescribed to be taken throughout the lifetime of the person.
  • The moral medicines treat the symptoms of the allergy but allergy shots treat the cause of the allergy.
  • Allergy shots help the patient suffering from asthma and eczema not to worry about allergies.
  • Helps to improve the mental health of the individual if he or she has suffered a lot of trauma because of allergies in the past.

Risks:

  • The site of injection appears to appear like hives or severe mosquito bites.
  • The redness at the site of injection becomes red and a larger bump tends to appear at the site.
  • Nasal congestion.
  • Sneezing and itchy skin.
  • Just after the injection is administered there is a risk of anaphylactic shock.
  • It may at first worsen the allergy symptoms when the shots are initially administered.
  • Tightening in the chest, dizziness and nausea can be observed in the first 30 mins after the injection.
