Lipid abnormalities are marked by abnormal levels of lipid in the body. Cholesterol and triglycerides are two of the most important lipids found in our bodies. Cholesterol is a waxy substance generated by the liver that plays a vital role in the formation of cell membranes. Being insoluble in water, cholesterol does not dissolve in the blood and is transported throughout the body with the help of small particles known as lipoproteins. These are broadly classified into two types - low-density lipoproteins or LDL and high-density lipoproteins or HDL.

  • LDL is commonly referred to as bad cholesterol,  as it can pile up in the arteries and accumulate, leading to severe obstruction, which increases the rest of problems like heart attack and stroke.
  • HDL also referred to as good cholesterol, aids in the elimination of LDL.

As important as it is to decrease the levels of LDL, it is equally important to manage healthy HDL levels.
