Hand and microsurgery is that branch of surgery that manages all traumas and diseases affecting the hand, wrist or upper limb that directly affects the functioning of the hand. Microsurgery is the reconstruction of the majorly affected hand, wrist and upper limb where the tiny blood vessels in the hand get injured.  Hand injuries can make daily tasks impossible. There are a range of issues due to which a patient is subjected to the hand and microsurgery that includes having a traumatic injury that includes tendon injuries, digit amputation, webbed fingers, carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, arthritis related deformities, soft tissues tumors and bone tumors.

 Patients who require hand surgeries:

Types of hand Surgeries:

  • Skin grafts:  It is the most commonly performed hand surgeries, where skin is attached to a part of the hand where the skin is missing. In this process a piece of skin is taken from a healthy donor site and attached to the injured area.
  • Skin flaps:  It is a highly complicated surgery where skin is taken from the donor site along with the blood vessel under the skin. This type of surgery is performed in those cases where the blood supply is not available to the injured site, which is due to the blood vessel damage or extensive tissue damage.
  • Closed reduction and fixation: This is performed in such cases where a part of the bone is broken or detached due to an injury. This surgery helps in the realignment of the bone and further holding it in place and thus the healing of the bone happens.
  • Tendon repair:  Tendons make up the muscle and any damage to the tendon makes it mandatory for the doctor to perform surgery. It occurs due to infections, trauma or sudden rupture.
  • Nerve repair: Any nerve damage in the hand leads to the loss of functionality of the hand. Thus, in such cases surgery becomes important.
  • Joint replacement: The patients suffering from arthritis undergo joint replacement. This surgery is also called arthroplasty. It undertakes replacement of the damaged bone due to arthritis.
  • Surgical Drainage: The treatment of hand infection due to various reasons involves using heat, elevation, antibiotics. Surgical drainage referred to the removal of pus from the infection site so that the site may heal when subjected to antibiotics.
