CT (computerized tomography) scan, also referred to as CAT scan, is a painless diagnostic modality that helps to generate detailed images of the heart, brain, bones, and various internal organs. The technique uses x-ray imaging techniques from various different angles, thereby helping to produce cross-sectional images of the affected area. Advanced CT scan offers many advantages over normal CT scan. The procedure is less time consuming and help to produce high-quality images, ensuring added precision and accuracy. Also, the intensity of the radiation used is comparatively low, making it even safer.

Types of advanced CT scan

CT scan is broadly classified into three types - calcium score screening heart scan, coronary CT angiography E and total body CT scan.

  • Calcium score screening heart scan helps to assess the calcium levels in the coronary arteries. Higher levels of the same can hinder the normal flow of blood, making you more susceptible to heart attack or stroke.
  • Coronary CT angiography helps to assess the buildup of plaque in the coronary arteries. The procedure is comparatively new and still undergoing research
  • A total body CT scan allows the doctor to assess the risks of potential problems, which have not yet shown their traces. The procedure focuses on three main areas which include the heart, the lungs and the abdomen.

Indications of advanced CT scan
CT scan helps to generate 3-D images of the heart, allowing the doctor to evaluate the organ thoroughly, without any invasive intervention. This help to detect any obstruction or blockage in the heart and heart structures. The various indications of CT are:

  • For evaluating abnormalities in the coronary artery and thoracic vessels
  • Symptomatic patients who have a low to moderate probability of coronary artery disease
  • To evaluate the patency of CABG
  • To assess a patient with heart failure
  • Pre-operative assessment of patients undergoing TAVI/TAVR

Advantages of advanced CT scan
Some advantages associated with advanced CT scans are:

  • High efficiency of results
  • Added precision and accuracy
  • Less procedural time
  • Detailed 3D images, allowing a better view of the affected area
