Erectile dysfunction, or ED, is a condition marked by the inability of a man to achieve an erection or maintain the same, during sexual intercourse. While many men may have experienced the problem occasionally, others may have to experience it on a regular basis. Erectile dysfunction is not a life-threatening condition and is usually considered a concern when it interferes with a person's sexual performance. There is a wide range of treatments available for erectile dysfunction. 

Causes
Erectile dysfunction is usually caused by three reasons:

  • Reduced blood flow to the penis
  • Problems with nerve supply
  • Hormonal abnormalities

These problems may be triggered by the following:

  • Underlying heart diseases, especially those involving the blood vessels
  • Conditions like diabetes, hypertension and cholesterol
  • Depression, stress and anxiety

  • Structural or anatomical penile disorders

  • A severe injury in the pelvic area or the spinal cord
  • Receiving Radiation therapy in the pelvic region

Symptoms 
The symptoms of erectile dysfunction include:

  • Difficulty with getting an erection
  • Problem with maintaining an erection during intercourse
  • Reduced interest in sex

Erectile dysfunction may also give rise to other sexual disorders, which include:

  • Premature ejaculation
  • Delay in ejaculation
  • Inability to achieve orgasm

Diagnosis 
Erectile dysfunction is usually detected with the help of a physical examination and by assessing the psychosocial history of the patient. The doctor may also recommend additional tests like ultrasound, nocturnal penile tumescence (NPT) test, urine and blood tests.
