Peripheral angiography or peripheral angiogram is a diagnostic procedure, that uses x-ray technology to detect and assess blocked arteries in the lower limbs. It is a catheter-based procedure that uses a minimally invasive approach.

Indications
Major indications of peripheral angiography include:

  • Peripheral occlusive disease
  • Intermittent claudication
  • Critical limb ischemia
  • Suspected femoropopliteal aneurysm
  • Suspected thromboangiitis obliterans
  • Suspected vascular trauma
  • Tumours
  • Arteriovenous malformations

Procedure

  • The procedure is performed under the influence of sedatives, such that you do not feel any pain
  • A tiny incision is made near the groin, through which the catheter is introduced into the artery.
  • The catheter is guided towards the affected area with the help of detailed imaging guidance.
  • Your doctor will administer a contrast material into your arteries for better visualisation
  • This is followed by taking x-ray images
  • If the doctors may feel the need, they will open the blockage simultaneously.
