IVC stands for Inferior Vena Cava. It is a large vein present inside the abdominal cavity that serves as a passage for the blood flowing from the lower portion of the body to the heart. The filtering device is implanted inside the IVC to filter any clots that may develop within the veins found in the legs or the pelvic area. This helps to elevate the risk of pulmonary embolism by preventing the large blood clots from moving towards the heart or lungs. The procedure is recommended to patients who do not respond to other treatment options. The procedure is done using detailed imaging guidance

Indications
The procedure may be performed on patients with any of the following conditions:

  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Pulmonary embolus
  • Severe injuries sustained in a trauma problem management

  • The procedure is performed under the influence of sedatives search that you do not feel any pain.
  • You will be required to lie down on your back and connected to a monitor that will keep track of your vitals.
  • The area where the incision is to be made sterilized and numbed using local anaesthesia.
  • A small incision is made and the catheter is introduced. Doctors will administer a contrast material that will help in better visualisation of the inferior Vena cava.
  • The capacitor will be slowly moved towards the affected area. Once it is in the precise position, the filter will be carefully placed in position.
