Intra aortic balloon pump, or IABP, is a balloon-like device that helps to regulate the flow of blood via the aorta, which is the largest blood vessel present in our body. As your heart pumps blood, the device becomes smaller, allowing the flow of blood to other parts of your body. When your heart relaxes, the same balloon inflates Tu Chor blood in your heart. The procedure is recommended to patients with heart defects that prevent enough blood from entering or leaving the heart. The condition is commonly referred to as cardiogenic shock and is quite likely to happen after a heart attack when your heart muscles are very weak owing to an underlying condition like arrhythmia Or myocarditis.

Indications
Some of the major indications of Intra aortic balloon pump are listed below:

  • Unstable angina without a definite cause
  • Heart attack
  • Abnormalities in heart rhythm
  • Heart failure
  • Congenital or acquired heart malformations

Procedure

  • The procedure is carried out under the influence of general anaesthesia. Throughout the surgery, your vitals will be tracked carefully
  • A small incision will be made near the groin to insert the balloon catheter
  • The catheter is then guided towards the affected area using detailed imaging guidance
  • Once it is in the right position, the balloon is carefully placed inside the affected artery. The ends of the catheter will be secured such that the balloon does not move from its place.
