TAVR Step by Step Procedure

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement or TAVR is a surgical procedure to replace the damaged aortic valve with a biological or mechanical valve. To explain the entire procedure with detail, I have taken a deep insight into this topic by a senior professional of Trans-Catheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) in Jaipur.

Pre-TAVR

·         The doctors prepare the patient for the operation.

·         Tests to check the allergic reactions of anesthesia are carried to study its effect on the patient.

·         Doctors recommend patients to clarify any doubts they have about the procedure and to mentally prepared.

·         In some cases, the patient is recommended to stop eating and taking certain medications before the procedure.

·         All the jewelry and contact lenses should be removed.

TAVR

·         Monitoring systems are set up already to keep a check on the health condition of the patient, crucial organs like heart are supervised with details to monitor every possible change that needs medical aid.

·         The procedure is initiated by providing anesthesia to the patient.

·         Through an intravenous line, medications to stop the formation of blood clots are administered to the patient.

·         The Tavi or Tavr doctors makes a small incision in the upper leg to access the heart through exactly a femoral artery.

·         In an alternative, the incision can be made in the chest to gain access through a large artery or left ventricle.

·         The made incision works as an entry point for a catheter which is a small and hollow tube. For clear access, scientifically advanced imaging techniques can be used for guidance.

·         When the catheter has reached the aortic valve, balloon valvuloplasty is often used to replace the damaged aortic valve with a new one.

·         The inflated balloon on the tip of the catheter pushes the damaged valve, and on the same position, the artificial valve is substituted.

·         Once the substitution is complete, the balloon is deflated and the catheter is withdrawn.

Post-TAVR

·         After the surgery, the patient is kept under intensive care unit until the doctor recommends.

·         Usually, the patient is shifted to a room after a day at the intensive care unit.

·         Discharge from hospital follows after 4-5 days, the stay at the hospital can vary depending upon the recovery of the patient.

·         As for the medications, painkillers and blood-thinning medications are prescribed for relief from pain and formation of blood clots, respectively.

·         Smoking should be avoided and intake of alcohol should be moderated at the least.

·         The rehabilitation program should be strictly followed which comprises of certain lifestyle modification and dietary changes.

·         Regular health appointments should be attended to keep thorough supervision on the recovery.

·         If the patient experiences any risks which are associated with TAVR surgery, immediately consult your heart doctor in India.
