Understanding Different Types Of Heart Surgeries

Every heart problem does not require surgery and can be managed by making healthy lifestyle modifications. Medication or non-surgical procedure are other options but when any of them does not work then heart surgery is considered as a last resort. Generally, surgery is often needed to address problems such as heart failure, plaque build-up that partially or totally blocks blood flow in a coronary artery, faulty heart valves, dilated or diseased major blood vessels (such as the aorta) and abnormal heart rhythms. Heart surgery hospitals in Jaipur, offer a specialised centre for treating heart diseases which is managed by an expert team of doctors.

Types of heart surgeries

There are many types of heart surgeries that are executed to address different heart problems.

Some of them are listed below:

1. Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)

Commonly known as coronary artery bypass surgery or heart bypass surgery. In CABG, a surgeon takes a healthy artery or vein from elsewhere in your body and connects it to supply blood past the blocked coronary artery. The grafted artery or vein bypasses the blocked portion of the coronary artery, creating a new path for blood to flow to the heart muscle.

2. Heart valve replacement or repair

Here, the surgeon repairs or replaces the existing valve with an artificial valve. If the surgeon chose to repair then he may insert a catheter through a large blood vessel, guiding it to the heart and inflate and deflate a small balloon at the tip of the catheter to widen a narrow valve.TAVI heart valve replacement is highly recommended by the doctors as the top hospitals in the region uses highly advanced technology and the latest approaches, thus ensuring maximum accuracy, precision and safety.

3. Insertion of a pacemaker or an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD)

This surgery is often done in the case of arrhythmia which is the condition where your heart beats too fast or too slow or with an irregular rhythm. Best surgeons initially prescribe medications to correct the defect but when it doesn’t work out then he may implant a pacemaker under the skin of the chest or abdomen, with wires that connect it to the heart chambers. The device involves the use of electrical pulses to control the heart rhythm when a sensor detects that it is abnormal. Similar is the work of an ICD, but it sends an electric shock to restore a normal rhythm when it detects a dangerous arrhythmia.

4. Heart transplant

A heart transplant is done by removing a diseased heart and replacing it with a healthy heart from a deceased donor.

5. Aneurysm repair

In Aneurysm repair, a weak section of the artery or heart wall is replaced with a patch or graft to repair a balloon-like bulge in the artery or wall of the heart muscle.

Apart from the above surgeries, a minimally invasive alternative to open-heart surgery that is catching many eyes is transcatheter structural heart surgery. This involves just a small incision in which a flexible tube called a catheter is inserted through blood vessels that can be accessed from the groin, thigh, abdomen, chest, and neck or collar bone.

Every treatment or a surgical procedure has some potential risk involved, same as with heart surgery. These include bleeding, infection and stroke and damage to tissue, heart, kidney, liver and lungs. But if precautionary measures are properly followed then these risks can be reduced.

The recovery time generally depends on the type of surgery you are undergoing, but for most, you are likely to spend a day or more in the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) and after that you will be shifted to the general ward.
