What is Peritoneal Dialysis

Dialysis is a medical procedure used to help the patients suffering from chronic kidney disease by helping to purify the blood. Dialysis can help to postpone the need for a kidney transplant and is one of the most popular treatment options for various nephrological disorders. Dialysis can be of two different types, haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Unlike haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis needs not to be performed clinically and can be performed at home or while travelling as well. The procedure is recommended at all the leading kidney treatment Hospital in India.

You can find some of the best kidney specialists in Jaipur who resort to the use of equipment based on the latest technological advancements and techniques that are at par with International standards. Peritoneal dialysis is carried out with the help of a catheter that is used to induce cleansing fluid inside the patient's abdomen. This helps to filter waste products from the patient's blood and the fluid along with these impurities is thrown out of the patient's body.

Peritoneal dialysis is very effective in helping patients suffering from diabetes, hypertension, renal inflammation and polycystic kidney disease. Peritoneal dialysis is much better than haemodialysis as the patient needs not to be dependent upon a doctor or nurse and the procedure can be carried out very easily at home. This proves to be very helpful as the procedure can be easily performed even while you are travelling or far away from home.

The patient needs not to be very strict with his diet as in the case of haemodialysis. This happens because the procedure is performed more frequently and hence does not result in excess accumulation of potassium, sodium and other fluids. The procedure giver longer lasting results as compared to haemodialysis. It does not even involve intravenous access that often leads to the disruption of circulation and fluid levels.

Peritoneal dialysis is best suited for patients who are not strong enough to tolerate the rapid fluid balance fluctuation that happens during haemodialysis and who have to travel more often and cannot visit a hospital or clinic more often. Peritoneal dialysis is a better treatment option if the patient shows some residual kidney function.

Although peritoneal dialysis is very effective, it is not suitable for every patient especially for those having large abdominal scars or suffering from hernia. Also, not everybody is able to perform the procedure entirely on their own and might need some assistance or help at times. It is also not recommended to patients suffering from inflammatory bowel disease, protein deficiency or any other chronic medical ailment.

The patient has to be very careful while performing the procedure and maintain proper hygiene or else it can lead to chronic infection. One of the greatest side effects of peritoneal dialysis is excessive weight gain as it can result in additional absorption of almost 100 calories per every session. Hence it is better to consult a specialist for proper guidance and stick to the guidelines set by him/her.
